Jones Bluff Lake
By Reed Montgomery / Reeds Guide Service

Lake level: down one foot
Water Temperature: Upper 80's
Water Clarity: Stained / upper lake Clear / lower lake

Most summertime anglers that have been fishing the lakes headwaters are seeing good results, catching bass of all kinds. Some big, spotted bass as well. But those anglers returning to this upper lake region this fall season, may see stained water conditions to even high, muddy water at times, with falls heavy rains.

The mid to lower lake region (below Cooters Pond boat launch), shows schools of both bass and baitfish and much clearer water conditions during the early to late fall period. Crankbaits, like deep diving models that reach depths of 10-15 feet deep have been the norm all summer long. Accompanied with Texas-rigged worms and Carolina-rigged plastics, these are deadly combinations for dredging the deeper bass holding in Jones Bluff Lake.

As waters begin to cool this fall season these same lures will continue to fool bass that eventually move back to shallow water. Other search lures (those that cover water fast and those lures that attract the more actively feeding bass) are lipless lures like rattletraps and Cordel spots in both shad colors and crayfish colors.

Also try both floating and suspending model jerkbaits, heavy spinnerbaits slow rolled in deep water drop-offs and always experiment with loads of bottom fished lures like small to larger sized worms, lizards, crayfish imitations, tube baits and jig combos. These lures will continue to fool these Jones Bluff bass this fall season, like they have all summer long.

These lures work on into late fall and early winter as well, including an ever increasing topwater bite on cloudy days and rainy days. The action will continue as Jones Bluff's bass feed heavily for the upcoming colder months ahead.
