GUNTERSVILLE AUG 2008 CAPT GERRY

The first week of August offered up some pretty good fishing despite the “dog days.” The bite is changing a little but when you find the bass their fairly active. We found some days where we were able to jump fish, and times where the bite was fairly consistent around the drops, ledges and creeks.

Jump fishing offered the most excitement of the week, as the schools were full of 1 to 2 pound fish that struck your bait hard and often, but if you wanted the bigger bite you needed to find the better fish in the creeks and drops. Most our bigger fish this week were caught flipping Tight-Line Jigs or Mister Twister Tubo’s along the grass lines. It appears to me that the fish are starting some early movement to the creeks and off the deep muscle beds, it should mean a pick up in the traditional “rat” bite and fishing should improve drastically.

Most of the week I fished the mid part of the lake and worked areas of 9 to 15 feet, a little shallower than some past days. Some of the grass is already being blown off the humps and channels by some early strong winds. The grass dying out will pick up the shallow crank bite over time very quickly. We averaged catches of 10 to 25 fish a day and biggest of the week was around 5 pounds.
