Brett Rutledge of Mobile is eagerly awaiting word to see if the 84-pound Cubera Snapper he caught off the Alabama coast is a new state record. If certified, his fish would break the current state record by a whopping 32 pounds.
Rutledge was trolling for King Mackerel in 170 feet of water about 40 miles south of Dauphin Island when he caught the fish.
The current record of 52 pounds is held by Michael Crawley of Grand Bay. That fish has withstood challenges since 1988.
